Adjustable Running Martingale #CM2
Description: This fully adjustable running martingale is made of single ply 3/4 inch harness leather with a neck and safety hobble strap. Neck strap, cincha strap, and ends on ring straps are all adjustable to fit horses of all sizes. The safety hobble strap runs through the gullet of the saddle and over the horn to prevent the neckstrap from sliding to the ears. The buckles, rings and snaps are stainless steel. Leather beneath the buckles and rings has been hand sewn together to prevent slipping or turning. A favorite with professional horsemen everywhere.
How it works: The martingale is a very useful tool to aid a horse in learning proper head position as he learns collection. If adjusted correctly a martingale does not force the head to stay in any given position but allows the horse a guide for head placement through automatic release of pressure on the reins when correct head placement is achieved. This can make it easier for a horse to reach a more collected frame over time by allowing assistance with head position as the rider teaches the horse to drive from behind.
A good rule of thumb for adjustment is to allow horse to stand comfortably, attach snap to cinch D ring and extend ring straps until they reach 1 to 2 inches from the bottom of the jaw.
Rope Headsetter #CST2
Description: This headsetter is made of 3/16 inch rope. All hardware is stainless steel. The knots are made of hand braided rawhide.
How it works: Pressure is applied from the tiedown strap to the nose as the head goes up causing the cheek pieces to slide through the nose piece rings until they hit the top stops on the cheek pieces. As the cheek pieces are sliding pressure is increased at the poll. This headsetter applies more pressure to the poll than to the nose. The pressure points together cause the horse to lower his head to a natural position to find release. This is a very popular training tool with ropers and can help those horses that have a tendency to raise their heads while roping. It can be a great training aid for other disciplines also. Horses can learn to ride with their heads lower if ridden in the headsetter tiedown.
The headsetter price does not include a tie down strap but you may purchase a Leather Tiedown Strap #ZG, either 3/4 or 1 inch in width, or a Nylon Tie Down Strap #ZH with the headsetter (see dropdown).
Sliding Gag Bit with Twisted Wire Snaffle #20-42
Description: This Dennis Moreland Tack Sliding Gag Bit is built with a twisted wire mouthpiece. You have a choice of a stainless steel twisted wire headstall or, for the more sensitive horse, a 3/4 inch harness leather slide ear headstall or a 3/4 inch brow band headstall (see photo). The center bar on the bit cheeks limits the movement of the sliding mouthpiece to provide a quicker action and instant relief. The hard lay nylon cord allows the bit to slide easily. The cord is attached to a stainless steel buckle which attaches it to adjustable single ply 3/4 inch harness leather cheeks. The twisted wire mouthpiece gives a stronger signal than the common snaffle or dog bone snaffle and is very good to use if your horse has become resistant to giving his nose and/or lowering his head. This snaffle should improve stops in a horse that is trying to run off.
How it works: The simultaneous pressure on the mouth from the sliding gag bit and on the poll from the twisted, shaped, stainless steel or the leather crown increases control of the nose and improves total balancing power to produce the ultimate in vertical flexion and feel. Because your rein aids are strengthened with the gag, your leg cues given at the same time become reinforced and easier for the horse to respond to. You will be able to better concentrate on fine details of your training rather than large rebalancing or repositioning efforts regardless of your type of riding. This gag bridle is an excellent training tool for both young and older horses that need to improve flexibility and response. Your horse will learn that when it breaks at the poll the release will be instant, smooth, and consistent. Since these gags release so quickly your horse is not trapped in position while it waits for the release to occur. This helps horses stay calm and confident in training and also when they are in competition. The leather crown works well with this twisted wire mouthpiece on horses that want to drop their heads while continuing to pull on the bit.
Although this Sliding Gag is sold without reins, you can choose any Dennis Moreland split reins or roping reins for your sliding gag. To select your reins simply visit the rein category and add them to your order.
If you don’t have experience with sliding gags Dennis Moreland Tack recommends you seek the help of a professional who has experience as you are learning to use them.
Rope Headsetter with Rawhide Nose #CST1
Description: This headsetter is made of 3/16 inch rope with a hand braided rawhide nose. All hardware is stainless steel. The headsetter price does not include a tie down strap but you may purchase a Leather Tiedown Strap #ZG, either 3/4 or 1 inch in width, or a Nylon Tie Down Strap #ZH with the headsetter (see dropdown).
How it works: Pressure is applied from the tiedown strap to the nose as the head goes up causing the cheek pieces to slide through the nose piece rings until they hit the top stops on the cheek pieces (the rawhide nose piece on this headsetter gives a stronger signal on the nose than the plain rope headsetter).
German Martingale Complete #CM1A
How it works: The key to any German Martingale is the release of pressure on the bit. The Y-cord on my German Martingale is made with a very hard finished, tightly braided cord (please see diagram at left). This cord runs from the cinch adjustment strap through the ring of the bit and connects to the reins at the Y cord rein knot. This cord releases immediately, with no drag, when you release finger-tip pressure on the reins. The horse learns to respond to pressure on the bit from this quick and rewarding release.
The neck strap on my German Martingale is long to give the correct angle from the cinch to the bit. This angle is very important in the training process because it encourages a horse to lower its neck from the withers before flexing at the poll. You will not find this angle on other German Martingales. The safety hobble on the neck strap goes through the gullet and over the horn to prevent the neck strap from sliding forward and getting caught behind the ears. Without the safety hobble pressure from the martingale sliding forward may cause a horse to rear up and possibly fall over backwards.
There is only one simple adjustment on my German Martingale; the adjustment knot that leads to the cinch snap. This can be adjusted so this Martingale fits any size horse correctly. This is a great tool to use on any age horse. It helps relax and collect a horse and helps eliminate dropped shoulders in preparation for advanced maneuvers.
A German Martingale needs to be used correctly and with caution. Always check a horse from the ground so they know the German Martingale is there before you get on. Do not let the horse drop its head to the ground because he can step through the martingale rein and cause an accident. When you dismount, immediately unsnap the martingale from the cinch.
Description: The complete German Martingale includes the #HS24 3/4″ Browband Headstall, your choice of the #17 Heavy Ring Snaffle with the #9 3/8th inch 2 piece mouthpiece, the #17 Heavy Ring Snaffle with the #42 3/16th inch twisted wire mouthpiece or the #18 Egg Butt Snaffle and your choice of 4 harness leather reins. The choice of reins includes: the #ASR6 DM Harness Leather Split Reins which are 6 1/2 to 7 feet and work well on the smaller horse, the #ASR3 XX Harness Leather Split Reins which are 7 to 7 1/2 feet and are a good length for the average horse 14.5 to 16 hands, the #ASR2 XXX Harness Leather Split Reins are 7 1/2 to 8 feet and fit horses 16 hands and over, and, the Roping Rein with Rein Ends (water loops) if you prefer a single rein.
If you prefer a different snaffle you can order the martingale with any of the snaffles I make by calling 817-312-5305. Also shown on the horse is the #CA1 3/16th” Rope Cavesson with Rawhide Braided Nose. This cavesson is sold separately and not included in the price of the German Martingale.
Assistance from a professional is necessary to learn safe use of a German Martingale. If you’re not familiar with the proper use of a German Martingale, get the help of a professional trainer who is experienced with its use.
Easy Stop #ES1
Description: The Easy Stop #ES1 is a very good piece of tack to use when you want to teach your horse to stop correctly when cued, without having to put pressure on the mouth. Often a horse will show a lot of improvement in it’s stop with just a few rides in the Easy Stop.
The noseband is made of 3/8 inch nylon rope that is specially designed to lay right from the first ride. The headstall is made of 3/4 inch dense, tight-fibered harness leather. The leather has been edged, hand-rubbed, oiled with Neatsfoot Oil and hand-rubbed again. The buckles are stainless steel and the leather beneath the buckles is hand stitched together to prevent the buckles from sliding down as you’re adjusting the headstall. This Easy Stop includes a hand-tied tan 1/4 inch nylon fiador tied to the top of the spoon so it won’t interfere with the reins.
Choice of Reins: The Easy Stop is available without reins or with these 4 best selling rein choices: #ASR6 DM Harness Leather Split Reins and #BLL6 Latigo on Latigo 3/4″ Snaffle Bit Reins are both shorter reins, 6 1/2 to 7 feet, and will work well on the smaller horse under 14.5 hands. The #ASR3 XX Harness Leather Split Reins, at 7 to 7 1/2 feet, is a good choice for the average horse, generally 14.5 to 16 hands. For a horse bigger than 16 hands I recommend my longest rein, the #ASR1 XXXX Harness Leather Split Reins. Choose your selection in the dropdown. Almost any of the reins I make will work well. If you don’t see what you need here please see the rein category. These reins can be purchased separately.
How it works: The Easy Stop noseband will apply pressure on the nose just like a hackamore or bosal. Additionally, the stainless steel Easy Stop spoon will come forward as the reins are pulled and make contact with the horse’s chin, in the space between the 2 jawbones (the intermandibular space). I carefully designed the angle of the Easy Stop spoon to function correctly and lay close enough to the horse’s intermandibular space that it doesn’t apply pressure until the reins are pulled. The edges of the spoon are smooth and have a gentle bevel so there’s nothing sharp touching your horse. This Easy Stop is designed so the spoon doesn’t flip over when there’s not any pressure on the reins.
This is used by top professional cutting, cow horse, reining and barrel horse trainers, among others, and will last through years of use. This is a real good tool to have in your tack room for those times when a horse is not responding as soon as he is being asked to stop. Your horse should be broke to give at the poll, and should be flexible both laterally and longitudinally before being ridden with an easy stop.
If you are unfamiliar with the use of an Easy Stop, seek professional help before using it on your horse.
