Latigo on Latigo 5/8″ Reins, Heavy Weight #BLL2
Description: I’ve worked closely with the same tannery for years to find a thicker hide just for these reins. Two pieces of heavy (24 oz.) latigo are tightly stitched together to make this rein 3/8” thick. They’re cut 5/8” wide and in your choice of two lengths; 7′ long and 7’9” long (see the dropdown to choose). I make the 7’9″ length for average size horses. The 7′ length works for those who are training the smaller cutting & cow horse colts and for ranch sorters who keep their horses really gathered up through continuous quick turns.
These are a very heavy rein that allows for superb contact with a horse’s face. My heavy weight latigo on latigo reins are more pliable than the harness leather on latigo reins #HL58 but they aren’t too heavy or stiff. If properly cared for, they will last many years. Like all of my reins, they are hand edged and rubbed. The attention to detail and craftsmanship of these reins speaks for itself, I guarantee it. Dennis
Bosal 5/8 Inch #HU2
Description & choices:
Rawhide or Kangaroo: This hackamore is available in 4 patterns: all rawhide, all kangaroo, rawhide body with kangaroo nose button and heel knot or kangaroo body with rawhide nose button and heel knot. Choose which pattern you’d like in the dropdown.
Bosal size: The rawhide and/or kangaroo this hand braided 5/8 Inch Bosal is made of is hand beveled for a smooth finish. The core is 12 plait and the 7 inch nose button is 20 plait. At 5 inches in width between the hanger buttons this bosal is available in 10, 11 & 12 inch lengths from top to bottom (see picture at left for a guide to sizing). General recommendations for bosal length: the 10 inch bosal will fit a horse with a small muzzle, usually those 14.2 hands and under that weigh 900 lbs. or less. The 11 inch bosal will fit a medium size muzzle and will fit the majority of horses. The 12 inch bosal is made to fit a larger horse, generally those horses 15.2 hands and over that weigh 1250 lbs. or more, but is dependent on muzzle size. Choose the size you need in the dropdown.
Core: This 5/8 Inch Bosal is available in soft & hard cores (see dropdown).
Heel knot: The heel knots on all Dennis Moreland Bosals are heavy to give instant release when the pressure on the mecate is released. A special addition to all Dennis Moreland Bosals is the spacer inside the heel knot, between the cores, which gives the mecate space to lay correctly. This is a very nice improvement over bosals with no spacer.
Hanger: This bosal comes with a handmade 3/8 inch Latigo California Style Hanger. The hanger is hand edged, rubbed, and waxed.
Mecates: You may buy the bosal without a mecate for no additional charge or with one of 3 mecate options; the DMR5 Nylon Mecate or the #DK3 or #DK5 Mane Hair Mecates (see dropdown for choices and prices).
#DMR5 Mecate: The #DMR5 mecate is made of round 5/8 inch brown braid on braid nylon rope with a tassel at one end and a 5/8 inch leather popper at the opposite end. It is available in 22 and 24 foot lengths. On average, the 22 foot mecate is built to ride on horses that are under 15 hands while the 24 foot length is built for horses 15 hands and taller. For more info click #DMR5 Round 5/8 inch Nylon Mecate.
#DK3 and #DK5 Mecates: These Mecates are made of six strands of horse mane hair. They have been firmly twisted by hand on a horse hair core to 1/2 inch (#DK3) or 5/8 inch (#DK5). They will meet the requirements of refined feel for even the most discriminating horseman or horsewoman. Either mecate is 22 feet long. There are various colors available including sorrels, greys, blacks and whites. Please call for color availability 817-312-5305. If I don’t hear from you I will choose the color. For more info click #DK3 1/2 inch 6 strand Horse Mane Hair Mecate or #DK5 5/8 inch 6 strand Horse Mane Hair Mecate. I will be happy to tie your mecate to your bosal when you purchase them together but you may need to adjust the wraps to fit your horse after you receive it.
Shown with the California Style Hanger. Shown on the horse is the all rawhide bosal with the #DK5 5/8 inch 6 strand Horse Mane Hair Mecate. In the picture showing bosal measurements they are shown on the #HU1 Bosalita.
Latigo on Latigo 5/8″ Reins, Medium Weight #BLL1
Description: I cut these doubled stitched reins 5/8” wide. I make them in two lengths: 7′ for horses under 14.2 hands and 7’9” for horses over 14.2 (see dropdown for choices). These Latigo on Latigo 5/8″ medium weight reins have very good feel and body.
To make these reins I sew 2 pieces of latigo leather together with small, tight stitches. This makes the reins 9/32nd of an inch thick. All of the work is done by hand. I edge these reins by hand, rub them, oil them and rub them again.
How they work: This is my 41st year making cowboy tack and I know which leather makes the best reins. I personally choose each hide I use to make sure you’ll have good even contact and communication with your horse. There are no gray signals with these reins.
These are my best selling doubled and stitched reins and are a favorite in the show ring. They will hold their flexibility and shape even in cold weather and they are built to last.
Try a pair; it will be the best pair of doubled and stitched reins you have owned, I guarantee it. Dennis
Latigo on Latigo 3/4″ Snaffle Bit Reins #BLL6
Description: At 7 feet long these Latigo on Latigo 3/4″ Snaffle Bit Reins are made a little shorter to ride your snaffle bit colts with. They’re 3/4 inch wide, approximately 9/32nd of an inch thick and are not too heavy or stiff. Made of premium quality hand picked hides and finished with hand rubbing, oiling and hand rubbing again these will give you the perfect feel.
This will be the best pair of doubled and stitched reins you have ridden your colts in, I guarantee it. Dennis
Rein Stops #ZA
Description: The Rein Stops are made of harness leather and measure 2 inches in diameter. They will fit any of the leather reins made at Dennis Moreland Tack. Reins Stops are made to go on the bit end of your reins and should be put on at the bit end.
How they work: Use these Reins Stops to prevent the rings on a martingale from getting hung up on the ends of your bit or on the bridle rein ends. This is a very good safety tool for very little investment. Sold by the pair.
XX Harness Leather Split Reins #ASR3
Description: This is the biggest selling rein I make. The XX reins are just right for people who ride cutting or cow horses horses. These reins are hand made from heavy harness leather and are 7 to 7 1/2 feet long and 5/8 inch wide which gives you enough length to pitch your horse the slack when you lay your hand down. These are short enough to ride our little cutters with or ride with contact or tune on your horse when needed and heavy enough to show in.
Crafting: Heavy harness leather bridle reins are very special to me. Every effort is made to give you the best rein you have ever had. I work closely with the tannery to get only the finest dense, tight fibered leather available. I cut the reins in pairs, hand edge, hand rub, oil and hand rub them again for a great feel before I ship them to you. This tight fibered harness leather will last for years. Please feel free to call 817-312-5305 and we will “talk reins”.
