DM Roper Cinch #11CR
Description: The hand-tied premium-grade DM Roper Cinch #11 CR is made of 31 strands of Mohair-blend cinch cord. Most cinches have 27 strands of cord or less. The extra strands allow the pressure to be spread further and also feel better to the horse. It’s just a more comfortable cinch. The buckles are made from round stainless steel rod with washers to hold the tongue straight. This DM Roper Cinch comes with a nylon web center strap with 1 inch stainless steel dees and a nylon web keeper for the double off tails on the right side. Roper cinches are available for any sized horse (see dropdown).
How it works: This 31 strand cinch will not curl or stretch and will last for years. The carefully crafted buckles are designed to always pull straight to prevent galling. The roper cinches are wide through the center to spread the pressure from the pull over the belly. Watch the video and read my blog: How to Measure for Cinch Length to make sure you get a cinch that fits.
Dennis Moreland Roper Cinches have been the top choice of professional horsemen for over forty years.
Cowboys Past, Present and Future by Jack Brainard
In this equally entertaining and educational book, Jack Brainard takes readers back in time to the Great Plains, where cattle, mustangs, trail drives, and sprawling ranches painted the backdrop for the development of the cowboys of the west as we know them today. Starting from the Westward expansion of the United States, Brainard describes the factors and elements that molded being a cowboy into a way of life. This book is perfect for anyone who has ever wanted to know more about the history of the cowboy, how the cowboy has adapted to changing times, and what the future may hold.
1 1/4″ Hobble #H11
Description: This figure 8 hobble is made of 1 1/4 inch doubled and stitched burgundy latigo leather. The buckle is a stainless steel square top roller buckle and the rings are made of stainless steel rod. When unbuckled it’s 48 inches long with a strap that holds the rings at a 4 inch length between the legs. This is a great size hobble for almost every size horse. It’s also a perfect hobble to teach your colt or horse to hobble. The latigo leather is strong but soft and will not chafe a horse’s legs. This stout hobble can be easily carried on your saddle rear D. It’s built to last for years. The leather has been hand edged, rubbed, oiled, rubbed with saddle soap and waxed. It’s a really good feeling hobble.
How it works: Figure 8 hobbles (which is the shape the hobble makes when it’s on a horse’s legs) work well for hobble training. This hobble has a little extra tail length which is a plus when hobble breaking a horse. If you have a colt that is squirming during its first training session, you can buckle the hobble a little longer and gradually tighten it as the colt settles down. Hobbles are a very good tool for teaching patience, trust in the handler, and yielding to pressure so the release is received. Many a horse has been saved from severe injury when caught in wire because it was hobble trained. A horseman teaches his horse to accept hobbles and sidelines so she/he won’t ever have to tie or ground tie a horse and take a chance on him ruining his tender mouth with a jerk from a stepped on or tied rein. Investing in hobbles and their training can have a big pay-back. Hobbles and sidelines have a quieting effect on the horse’s mind.
To put a set of hobbles on:
1. Starting with the right front leg, wrap the end of the hobble strap clockwise around the leg and lace it through the first metal ring.
2. Lace the strap through the second ring.
3. Run the strap behind the left front leg.
4. Buckle the strap.
The first time you use the hobbles on your colt or horse, or while training the horse to accept hobbles, use a wide open sandy area. Do not put hobbles on in a confined space until they accept them easily and well. If you are not familiar with the use of hobbles seek help from a professional who is experienced with their use.
Eggbutt Snaffle Bit #18
Description: The Eggbutt Snaffle Bit #18 is made of Stainless Steel. The mouthpiece is 5 1/8 inches wide, slightly bowed and has inlaid copper strips to increase salivation. It is 3/8th inch in diameter at the corners of the mouth and gradually tapers to 1/4 inch in the center.
How it works: When each rein is pulled the eggbutt snaffle bit will give a clearer signal than a ring snaffle because there is a larger area of contact on the corner of the mouth and contact on the opposite side of the face. This helps the colt to bring his whole face through the turn rather than just his nose. This bit is NRCHA & AQHA legal.
This is my favorite snaffle and I use it on almost all my young horses. Dennis
